Movers, Not Shakers!, Inc.

President and founder of Brooklyn, New York-based Movers, Not Shakers!, Inc., Mark Ehrhardt, is committed to doing all he can to protect the environment and reduce US dependence on foreign oil. That's why his moving company is the first is New York to incorporate green moving practices from start to finish, including using biodiesel to power its moving trucks.

"All of our moving trucks run on biodiesel produced locally by Tri-State Biodiesel," Ehrhardt explained. "We switched to B20 in 2007 and have been thrilled with its performance so far."

Biodiesel is just one of the ways Movers, Not Shakers!, Inc. is going green. They also use reusable moving bins, power from green sources in their storage warehouse; and donate an amount calculated to offset the rest of their CO2 footprint to Prospect Park in Brooklyn.

"Choosing this direction is a sound decision because it reduces our dependence on foreign oil, reduces harmful emissions and gets us closer to leaving the world a better place then we found it on some small level," Ehrhardt said.

The moving industry is considered to be one of the most difficult to make green because fuel emissions are a major cause of global warming and most packing products are made from plastic and other non-renewable, petroleum-based materials.

Ehrhardt hopes other companies will follow their lead. "We're inviting everyone else to join us. Together the NYC moving industry can have a tremendous positive impact on our quality of life," he said. "Meanwhile, we're the only game in town for people who choose to move in an eco-fiendly manner."

"Moving is never easy, especially here in New York," he added. "While your life is in the turmoil that moving inevitably creates, if you can think about the choice you've made that reaches out from beyond your personal circumstances and has a positive impact, it can have a calming influence on the overall moving experience.
