Disneyland began using 98 percent biodiesel fuel (B98) in 2007 in the Disneyland Railroad's five steam train attraction locomotives. The resort is now using a B99 blend made from used cooking oil from its kitchens. Additionally, Disneyland expanded the use of biodiesel to include the Mark Twain Riverboat and other equipment.
Disneyland’s biodiesel program involves a unique closed-loop feature that collects used cooking oil from each of its restaurant locations for shipment to a local biodiesel plant for processing to B99. The biodiesel is then purchased back for use in attraction vehicles and other supporting equipment.
Disneyland staff estimate that their biodiesel use reduces petroleum consumption by 200,000 gallons a year – 75 percent of the resort’s entire diesel fuel use.
"We have been recycling our used kitchen grease for years, but this innovation took recycling to another level," said Frank Dela Vara, director of environmental affairs and conservation at Disneyland Resort.
Disneyland was honored with the 2009 Governor's Environmental and Economic Leadership Award (GEELA) for its environmental achievements. The award, which is California's highest and most prestigious environmental honor, recognizes individuals, organizations and businesses that have demonstrated exceptional leadership for voluntary achievements in conserving California's resources, protecting and enhancing the environment and building public-private partnerships.
