Robins Air Force Base, GA
The Green Procurement Program Team at Robins Air Force Base (AFB), Ga. was awarded the prestigious White House Closing the Circle Award in 2008 and 2009 in the green purchasing category. Their far-reaching environmental accomplishments include the use of B20 in all diesel equipment such as tugs, which pull aircraft to position, and refuelers, capable of carrying 6,000 pounds of jet fuel to awaiting aircraft. In 2008, Robins Air Force Base purchased 173,000 gallons of biodiesel fuel and the AFB Fueling Depot has a 75,000 gallon biodiesel storage capacity to help support the mandatory requirement for biodiesel fueling of all diesel-powered vehicles. In addition to using biodiesel, Robins is evaluating biobased hydraulic fluids, engine oil, antifreeze, solvents and cleaners to further expand its green philosophy.

Fairchild Air Force Base, WA
In September 2003, the first truckload of biodiesel fuel was delivered to Team Fairchild. Since then, they have become the biggest user of this fuel in the region, dispensing over 150,000 gallons of biodiesel into their government vehicles. In 2007, Team Fairchild switched both of their storage tanks and dispensers at their military service station to solely allocate biodiesel fuel. This has increased B20 usage by over 50 percent, while decreasing diesel consumption. Most of the biodiesel fuel Team Fairchild uses is a B20 blend of 80 percent diesel and 20 percent soy biodiesel. Team Fairchild has also participated in a local coalition, consisting of businesses, entrepreneurs, and environmental regulators to address the logistics and details of bringing biodiesel to the region. Internally, their transportation supply, public works, and environmental management functions have worked together to coordinate the supply, potential vehicle maintenance and infrastructure impact of bringing B20 to the base. Team Fairchild wants to ensure there is no mission impact to vehicles or fuel storage infrastructure.
