New Jersey
Department of Transportation
The New Jersey Department of Transportation has used B20 in their diesel-powered vehicles since 2001.
NJDOT agreed to begin using a biodiesel blend after meeting with representatives from the Medford Township School District, which began its own successful biodiesel program in its New Jersey school bus fleet three years earlier. NJDOT was the third major entity to use B20 in New Jersey, following New Jersey Transit and the Medford Township School District.
The NJDOT biodiesel project was started with funds originating from Petroleum Overcharge Reimbursement Fund (PORF) monies, which are federal funds resulting from settlements with major oil companies for reaping excess profits during the energy crisis of the 1970s.
At the time the program began, Transportation Commissioner and New Jersey Transit Chairman James Weinstein said, "Expanding the use of biodiesel to a portion of the state's diesel-powered vehicle fleet is consistent with New Jersey's overall efforts to promote advanced fuel technologies."
