US Marine Corps, Camp Pendleton, CA
Southwest Region Fleet Transportation Team (SWRFT)
SWRFT has been using biodiesel fuel since October 2003. In June 2007, the total two-year delivery requirement for all Southwest Marine Corps installations was 3.15 million gallons of biodiesel. According to the Contract Information System (CIS) database, that makes them the biggest biodiesel user on the west coast.
Approximately 50 of their semi-tractor trailers, which are used to transport tactical war fighting equipment around Southern California marine Corps installations for training purposes, have "Powered by Biodiesel" stenciled on their cab doors. By requiring the use of B20 biodiesel in all equipment that uses this fuel, the Team has reduced consumption of petroleum diesel fuel by 20 percent. This fuel blend has had no effect on horsepower, fuel economy or engine performance. In fact, the switch to biodiesel has resulted in a 20 percent reduction in diesel engine emissions and particualte matter generation. This is a significant reduction in pollutants as SWRFT has 817 diesel engine vehicles and consumes 1.3 million gallons of biodiesel a year.
